MAINE PUBLIC BROADCASTING INTERVIEW ABOUT PHILANTHROPY PROJECT: STREET PIANO
The Street Piano Project brought music into the heart of downtown Bangor by placing a donated piano in a public space for anyone to play, creating moments of connection through shared creativity. Inspired by street piano initiatives around the world, the project came to life through generous community support. Special thanks to Wayne Bennett for piano tuning and repair, the Discovery Museum for providing renovation space, The Rusted Raven Furniture Co. for piano design and refinishing, and Serendipitous 2 for donated paint.
The street piano movement began in 2008 with British artist Luke Jerram’s Play Me, I’m Yours, an international public art project that placed pianos in streets, parks, and plazas to invite spontaneous music-making. Since then, the movement has expanded to hundreds of cities across more than 50 countries, including London, New York, Paris, Sydney, and São Paulo. These installations encourage connection, creativity, and shared public experiences through music.
